Domain names were put into place because ‘short’ web addresses are more user friendly. A domain name directs to an IP-address. This IP address consists of a long string of numbers. These strings are much harder to remember than their user-friendly alternative: the domain name!

Let’s get one thing straight: your domain name is not your webhost. People tend to mix up the two. The difference? The domain name is the name you type in the address bar. A webhost is a service provider that makes sure your domain stays online.
