Domain names explained

We use them daily, but what are domain names exactly? Curious how it all started? Wondering why domain names even exist? This page has all the information you want...

What is a domain name?

We use them daily, but what is a domain name exactly?

Why do domain names exist?

Domain names were put into place because ‘short’ web addresses are more user friendly. A domain name directs to an IP-address. This IP address consists of a long string of numbers. These strings are much harder to remember than their user-friendly alternative: the domain name!

Your website's address

What is a domain name? A domain name, sometimes called URL or website name, is the string of letters your visitors see in the address bar, usually found in the top of your browser window. An example: our domain name is Domeinenbank.nl. The word ‘domain name’ comes from the English term Domain Name System (DNS).

The difference between domain name and webhosting

Let’s get one thing straight: your domain name is not your webhost. People tend to mix up the two. The difference? The domain name is the name you type in the address bar. A webhost is a service provider that makes sure your domain stays online.
