In this article, we’ll explain step by step how to find the owner of a domain name, for both .nl and .com domains.
How to find the owner of a .nl domain
- Go to sidn.nl
SIDN is the official registry for .nl domain names. Through their website, you can easily look up domain information. - Use the “Whois” search function
Enter the domain name on the SIDN Whois page. You’ll immediately see whether the domain is active, and in most cases, you’ll also see who is behind the registration. - Check the registration information
Often, there will be a link, email address, or other contact details of the person or company managing the domain. Sometimes, the listed contact is a domain broker or intermediary. They can forward your message to the owner, even if the owner prefers to remain anonymous. - Privacy regulations don’t have to be an obstacle
Since the introduction of GDPR (privacy legislation) in 2018, personal data is no longer freely displayed. However, this doesn’t mean you can never get in touch if the owner wants to stay anonymous. You can always try contacting the domain owner via their registrar. The registrar is allowed to contact the owner directly and can give them the option to respond to an interested buyer. This indirect route still allows you to express interest in the domain.
Finding the owner of a .com domain
- Use an international Whois service
Go to websites like whois.com or ICANN to find publicly available information about .com domains. - Look for the “Registrant Email”
If you’re lucky, the registrant’s email address is listed. Due to privacy protection, this is rare nowadays, but it does still happen. If no email address is shown, move on to step 3. - Check the registrar
Just like with .nl domains, it’s always clear which registrar the domain is registered with. For .com domains, you can also contact the registrar (such as GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.). They may be able to connect you with the owner. The registrar’s name (and sometimes contact details) can be found in the Whois/lookup information you just checked. - Use a domain broker
Finding the owner isn’t always easy, and in many cases, negotiations will need to be conducted in English. If you’re serious about acquiring the domain, you can hire a domain broker to handle negotiations on your behalf. A broker helps you find and approach the owner and assists in developing a strategy.
Finding a domain owner can take some effort, but it’s certainly not impossible. And who knows: you might soon have that dream domain in your hands. Good luck with your search!
