What is a domain name?
What is a domain name? A domain name, sometimes called URL or website name, is the string of letters your visitors see in the address bar, usually found in the top of your browser window. An example: our domain name is Domeinenbank.nl.
Why do domain names exist?
The domain name was introduced to make the overall experience of browsing the internet a less arduous task for the average internet user. Why?
Even though they appear in your browser’s address bar, domain names are not a website’s address. A website’s IP address is. Having to type (and subsequently remember) a long string of numbers for each of your favorite websites is a lot of work – this is why the domain name was introduced.
The difference between a domain name and web hosting
Your domain name is not your webhost. People tend to mix up the two. The difference? The domain name is the name you type in the address bar. A webhost is a service provider that makes sure your domain stays online.
